Our faith in God was never meant to be a private matter. We are called to a personal relationship with Christ lived out in the community. God calls us to gather as his people. It was never meant to be a “negotiable” in our lives but a command from God so that we can be the people he’s called us to be so we can impact a lost and hurting world.
Why crucifixion? We know how vile it was. We hear how revolting, dehumanizing, and despicable crucifixion was—so WHY did Jesus die this way? Why is the cross God’s plan for redemption?
When we get into the problem of good and evil in the world and the theological problems of suffering, it can sound theologically theoretical. We can talk about suffering in Haiti or the suffering of someone we know but the real question is, “Could God let bad things slip into my life? Why do bad things happen to me?” Let’s answer the “why?”
There are few questions that have stirred more debate than the one that forms the sermon title today. Our culture has come to tell us that all faith systems are really the same. Much of what we see and hear in our culture seems to be OK. It makes sense. It sounds good. So, we ask the question, “why is that wrong?” It’s easy to forget that the message of popular culture and the message of Christ are often in conflict with one another. What sounds good may not always be correct.
It’s easy in today’s culture for Christians to get into this “bunker mentality”. It’s the idea that I’m going to take care of my people and separate myself from the rest of the world. One problem, God has called us to love the world and to serve those out in the world. But why?
